Scene: Mme. Loisel discovers that the diamond necklace she borrowed from a friend to wear to an evening reception is no longer around her neck. Rather than report that to her friend, she and her husband borrow all they can to buy an exact replacement for 30,000 francs. Ten years later after working multiple menial jobs to repay the debt, they discover that the original was a fake worth 500 francs.
